Hoosier Children - Kids CountWith the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Kids Count publishes an annual book that state-level organizations across all fifty states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia use to create reports on the well-being of children and families. These reports compare counties within each state using data books filled with valuable insights. In Indiana, this data plays a crucial role in shaping policies and programs that support Hoosier Children, helping drive meaningful change and informed decision-making.

A preview of the latest data regarding Indiana kids is now available in the 2015 Data Book Snapshot and reveals information regarding the education, health, and living situation of Hoosier children across all counties. Policy makers, government officials, educators, counselors, grant writers, and others can find crucial data about schools such as the following:

  • Indiana is one of the lowest ranking states for student-counselor ratio, the eighth worst in the United States.
  • The percentage of special education students enrolled in public education institutions has gradually decreased.
  • One in four Indiana high school students report being bullied on school property every year.

Besides education, the snapshot also contains additional information on topics such as poverty. For example, users can find that the percentage of children living in poverty has remained high at 22.3% since 2013.

The Full Data Book will be released in February 2015 and obtainable here. Once available, users can download the book for free and quickly print a County Profile to get in-depth, county-specific information. This information is significant for educating counties, as well as grant writing for nonprofit organizations. The Data Book provides essential information in understanding what Hoosier youth face and for data-driven decision-making.
