American Electric Power (AEP) created the American Electric Power Foundation in 2005. Continuing the tradition of corporate philanthropy, the American Electric Power Foundation considers grant requests from organizations in communities served by AEP’s regional utilities. The Foundation is focused on improving lives through education, protecting the environment, providing basic human services, and enriching the quality of life in communities through art, music and cultural awareness.
The Foundation generally will consider requests either greater than $15,000 or from organizations in communities served by AEP facilities that are willing to commit to multi-year participation. To be eligible to receive a grant from the American Electric Power Foundation, an organization must:
- Be a 501(c)(3) public charity, a state or political subdivision, a government-owned or operated college or university, or an exempt operating foundation; and
- Be located within the AEP service territory or be national or regional in scope and have a purpose that is beneficial to the general public, the broad environment or the customers of American Electric Power
The Foundation may also consider initiatives outside of AEP’s 11-state service area. Requests are accepted throughout the year for consideration at regular meetings of the American Electric Power Foundation Board of Directors.
The following focus areas will be eligible for consideration by the Foundation:
- Improving lives through education from early childhood through higher education
- Protecting the environment
- Providing basic human services in the areas of hunger, housing, health and safety
- Enriching the quality of life in our communities through art, music and cultural heritage
In 2013, the Foundation made investments totaling more than $9 million to nearly 150 benefiting organizations and communities in the 11-state service area and beyond. Click here to see the 2013 American Electric Power Foundation Annual Report.
