White House Summit on Early Education

by | Dec 8, 2014

The White HouseThis Wednesday, December 10th, the Obama Administration will host a Summit on Early Education. The Summit will convene a wide-ranging coalition of philanthropic, business, education, advocacy, and elected leaders, as well as other stakeholders dedicated to increasing the availability and accessibility of high-quality early childhood education.

During the Summit, states selected to receive $250 million in the 2014 Preschool Development Grants competition, and $500 million in Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership awards will be announced. These funds are meant to increase availability and access to high quality early childhood education in high-need communities. New private sector commitments to growing opportunities for high-quality early education will also be publicized.

The Summit builds on the call to make “high-quality preschool available to every single child in America,” (President Obama, State of the Union, 2013). The Administration has laid out a proposal involving multiple new investments in early education such as developing more Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships, fostering more evidence-based, voluntary home visiting, and offering Preschool for All. Since the President’s 2013 call to action, more than 30 states and cities have established new programs or expanded access to preschool.
