The 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading and Mathematics Report Card was released this month. Nationally representative samples of more than 376,000 fourth-graders and 341,000 eighth-graders were assessed in mathematics or reading. Results are reported for public and private school students nationwide and public school students in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Department of Defense schools.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan noted that the report card “provides encouraging but modest signs of progress in reading and math for U.S. students.” Eighth-grade reading scores—which have been flat over the last decade—have risen, and achievement among the largest minority group—Hispanic students—is also up.

Indiana’s 4th-grade mathematics and reading scores have increased by 5 points between 2011 and 2013, a significant improvement. Following the national trend of modest improvement, 8th-grade math and reading scores improved by 3 points and 2 points, respectively, during the same period.
