Governor Pence has established a new state agency, the Center for Education and Career Innovation (CECI). The agency will report directly to the Office of the Governor and be responsible for aligning, amplifying, and advancing the work of Indiana’s public, private, and nonprofit K-12, higher education, and workforce entities and partners. CECI will support the Governor’s goals for the state, including improving the math and reading skills of elementary students, increasing non-waiver high school graduation rates, and ensuring that our students are prepared to enter science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers that are producing high-demand, high-wage jobs across Indiana; and improving the quality of the Hoosier workforce.
The guiding principles of the agency, which will work closely with the Indiana Education Roundtable, the State Board of Education, the Indiana Career Council, and the Indiana Works Councils, include:
- Supporting integrated service delivery that is student- and adult-worker-centric and is focused on defined outcomes.
- Ensuring Indiana’s educators are given the necessary freedom, support, and flexibility to succeed in the classroom and are rewarded for their successes.
- Fostering, identifying, and scaling the most innovative and effective education and workforce models, tools, and resources.
- Holding students, adult workers, educators, schools, higher education institutions, and workforce programs accountable for their progress through rigorous, fair, and transparent accountability systems.
Governor Pence stated, “The Center for Education and Career Innovation will strive to improve coordination between pertinent agency partners and industry voices to ensure a world-class education for students and better prepare adults to be successful in their chosen career pathway that also meets industry demands. By creating a focal point for bringing together and deploying critical resources, the agency will deliver real change in Indiana, benefitting Hoosier families, employers, and taxpayers, and, ultimately, impacting every Hoosier across the state.”
