personalsafety ojjdpU.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) are accepting applications for the Second Chance Act Strengthening Relationships Between Young Fathers and Their Children Reentry Mentoring Project. In effort to support and encourage young fathers to return to their families and communities after spending time in a juvenile or adult correctional facility, the program offers funding to assist fathers with need.

Second Chance Act Strengthening Relationships Between Young Fathers and Their Children Reentry Mentoring Project offers funding to young father-offenders for comprehensive transitional services, mentoring, and (particularly) the development of parenting skills. Comprehensive transitional or reentry services include case management, targeting offender needs that affect recidivism, promoting responsible fatherhood and family engagement, and working on life skills. Transitional services are delivered one-to-one, in groups, and in peer mentoring settings.

The goal of this Project is to promote positive parenting behaviors such as homework assistance, words of encouragement, showing affection, and family activities. Each applicant is encouraged to propose activities that engage families, reconnect families, and promote family involvement.

Eligible applicants are limited to nonprofit organizations, including:

  • Faith-based nonprofits
  • Tribal nonprofits
  • Community nonprofits
  • Federally recognized Indian tribes

All applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on March 2, 2015. Applicants must submit letters of support or memoranda of understanding with juvenile justice or adult correctional agencies that oversee the reentry process for young fathers less than 25 years old.
